GBP 150.00 1980s Taiwanese edition compiled from an eight-volume handwritten Manchu manuscript held in the Far Eastern Library at the University of Chicago. Sungyun was a Plain Blue Banner Mongol who held important positions during the Qianlong reign of the Qing dynasty. This work was written at the behest of the Emperor and published in 1789. Of the 120 stories, the first 60 deal with the early history of the Qing dynasty, the second 60 comprise tales concerning moral precepts and old Chinese precedents. They are of importance as a 'pure' example of Manchu writing and for revealing the way of life, culture, philosophy and knowledge of the Manchu and Mongol bannerman during the Qing dynasty. The work was later translated into Chinese. Seven page introduction in English by Kanda Nobuo, then the Manchu text. Scarce. Subjects: Literature Item 593 in List 214.
