Hu Zhengyan: SHIZHUZHAI JIANPU. (Letter Papers from the Ten Bamboo Studio: 1934 Edition). 十竹齋箋譜 。 (明)胡正言 輯. Beijing, 2013. 2 pp. modern introduction, then various paginations of folded leaves with introductory texts and listings on images. Colour woodcuts throughout, many with embossing. 4 vols. 32x21 cm. Stitched, cloth case.
GBP 1,000.00
Full-size facsimile reproduction of the 1934 edition of this famous and beautiful work that was first published at the end of the Ming dynasty. Illustrated throughout with delicate and varied designs and images and including the use of gauffrage.
This version for the most part faithfully follows the layout of the 1934 edition although volumes 1-3 contain slightly fewer images than the total called for in the list of contents in each volume. The majority of these missing images seem to have been incorporated into the final Volume 4 at various points, as this Volume 4 has 10 more images than called for in the list of contents.
Published by Zhongguo Shudian in Beijing. Printed in colour from woodblocks and very nicely done.
Produced, we are told, in a very limited edition of 200 copies and which immediately went out-of-print. Testament to the continuing fascination in China with this peak of Chinese printing and equal testament to the complex ongoing history of its publication. Images available on request.
Subjects: Illustrated Books
Item 59 in List 214.
