Birns went to Shanghai in 1947 and took the photographs in this truly extraordinary and enlightening collection for Life magazine - refugees and prostitutes, soldiers and beggars, street executions and urban protests - often in conditions of great danger. They remained mostly unpublished, many appearing for the first time in this book. Edited by Carolyn Wakeman and Ken Light. Foreword by Orville Schell, preface by Birns. Recommended.
