A well-made, inexpensive facsimile of the 1779 edition of the 'Lienuzhuan' with good reproductions of the illustrations. The 'Lienuzhuan', or Biographies of Virtuous Women, is attributed to Liu Xiang of the Han Dynasty and was later much enlarged upon by various writers and editors. The edition on which this one is based was printed from blocks carved during the Ming Wanli period (1573-1619), with many beautiful woodcut illustrations, the designs of which were attributed to the Ming artist Qiu Ying (although they are not referred to elsewhere in accounts of his work). In Chinese.
