A notably fine facsimile of Liang's 1681 edition. The 'Shengyu' or 'Sacred Edict' as it became known in the West (including to the poet Ezra Pound who 'canonized' it in certain less usual contexts), began its textual life as a set of 16 moral maxims set out and promulgated by the Kangxi emperor in 1670. Liang Yannian (1673-81) expanded on these, providing illustrative examples from history and literal illustrations which were brought together and published in the original woodblock edition of 1681. The original is a fine example of printing and book illustration from the period. Cf. Hummel, p. 329; and 'Beijing Tushuguan Guji Shanben Mulu' p. 1495 (for the original edition).
