In recent years, there have been two extraordinary exhibitions in the West devoted to fine Chinese antiquarian books, both based on the collections of China's National Library in Beijing, and both in rather extraordinary locations given the centrality of the material culture which they celebrate. An exhibition in Queens Public Library, New York, was published in the unprecedented catalogue, 'Visible Traces'. 'The Ten Bamboo Studio' is the catalogue of a second exhibition held at the National Szechenyi Library, Budapest. There is some overlap in the material presented, but there are many entries and illustrations here of items not included in the New York show - early editions of illustrated drama and vernacular literature are particularly well served. This, along with new introductory texts and catalogue entries - entirely paralleled in slightly eccentric English - makes this another essential reference for any Western collector or student of the book in China.
