With superb detailed black-and-white illustrations by Chinese artists of 'everything from portraits of mortals and immortals to domestic and international news' (Lu Xun). Many stories and illustrations of a delightfully quirky nature with many showing the western influence present in Shanghai in the late 19th century. Each reproduction of the original lithographic image is accompanied by a useful commentary explaining the image and event or story it depicts. This considerably assists research into this fascinating publication. This is a finely-produced reprint of the complete series on 'xuanzhi' paper that brings out the full detail of the original.
