Arakawa, Hirokaza et al: THE GO COLLECTION OF NETSUKE. Tokyo National Museum. Tokyo, 1983. 216 pp. 583 illustrations, 346 in colour. 29x22 cm. Cloth, slipcase.
GBP 780.00
An extremely hard-to-find and lavish documentation of a major Japanese collection of netsuke, housed in the Tokyo National Museum and not normally on show. The collection was donated by Baron Go Seinosuke and is famous for the quality of its 306 pieces - a collection put together with painstaking care. This is the only work that shows the collection in its entirety and in full colour. Good colour plates of all netsuke, often showing a piece from various angles. The photographs are complemented by small black-and-white illustrations of all signatures on pieces. The work is accompanied by essays on the origins and development of netsuke, types, designs, artists and ojime. There are also biographical sketches of netsuke masters and bibliographies.
